Tip from Pete:

Turn Followers into Biters!

(Courtesy of The Next Bite)

Esox anglers who notice a following muskie quickly, and react with a triggering move (zig-zagging, twitching or speeding up) end up taking photos of more muskies instead of collecting "Seen One" stories. To me, a huge part of the effectiveness of these triggering maneuvers is in how quickly they are performed. I believe when it comes to following fish, each second that goes by with the presentation not changing - greatly increases the odds that the fish won't bite. Simply put, the sooner the triggering move is performed, the better.

Make certain you have quality polarized glasses. Then, watch behind and below your lure for following muskies. Too many people look at their lure. Muskie are often way behind a presentation. Look there. If even a questionable shadow is noted, do something to change the presentation right away ... and be ready!

Article from Pete:

Barbs, Cutters & Stuff

Hook Cutting
We’ll start with what may likely be the most important topic in Esox release: hook cutting. We’ve been over this a bunch, but will never stop. Esox Angler reader John Nutkins asked me to cover the when and how of cutting hooks.

This is a subject that may not have nearly as much importance for folks going barbless (more on that later), since with no barbs, hooks easily back out with no ripping or tearing. However, even when barbless, sometimes it’s just easier and quicker to cut hooks. Sometimes angles are such that it’s just simpler to cut a shaft, hook eye, or split ring rather than try to get the right angle to back a hook out—which brings us to the first part of John’s question: “when to cut ‘em.”
